Convention Is Nearing

Bus Trip:

Leave from the Macy's parking lot at Cumberland Mall at 7:45am on July 24th (please arrive no later than 7:30am).
We will travel to Nashville, TN and tour the replica of the Parthenon there.
After the tour, we will head on to Richmond, KY where we will stay at the Holiday Inn Express.
On July 25th we will wake-up and directly head to the university.

On July 30th we will leave the university around 9am and return to Atlanta around 4pm (with a stop for lunch).

Evaluation, Application and National Convention!

APPOINTED OFFICES: If you have any students interested in applying for Editor, Historian or Webmaster, please have them complete the Excel application and e-mail it to me, ward@gjcl.org. Get the Application.

NJCL Convention Bus Trip Information: We leave at 7:00am on July 24 and travel to the Southern Parthenon. After the tour we continue on to Eastern Kentucky University (do NOT sign-up for the "pre-convention" housing). On July 30 we will drive directly home.

Download, fill-out, print and mail/fax a packet request along with payment of $450 to the NJCL.

Cost $250, paid to the GJCL no later than June 3. Please send checks to Mr. Ward at 725 Scottish Mill Run, Marietta, GA 30068.

Get your bus forms here, which must be sent in with your payment.

The Chapter Cup

Overall Convention Chapter Champion
There will be three categories of competition for the overall convention champion: small, medium and large chapters. The divisions for small, medium and large will be decided relative to the number of delegates from each chapter in a given year. For the small and medium chapters the champion will be chosen based on the total number of sweepstakes and ludi points earned by the delegates in the chapter. However, in the large chapter division, there will be two champions. One champion will be decided based purely on the total number of sweepstakes and ludi points earned by the delegates. The second champion will be decided by an average of sweepstakes and ludi points earned by delegates. Points earned in ludi competition do not count towards the individual sweepstakes, only for the chapter competition.

First Deadline Approaches!

This Friday is the deadline for the discounted registration ($105 per delegate/chaperon). However, you will still have two weeks after that date, until April 1, to register ($110 per delegate/chaperon).

Natalie is looking for willing individuals to put on workshops. You do not necessarily need to have an idea of what to do, just a desire to help. Please e-mail Natalie with your interest, faulkner@gjcl.org.

Don't forget to tell your students to apply for the scholarships (there is one for teachers too). The deadline for those applications is April 1.

Convention Registration!

Registration for the spring GJCL Convention is now "live". Be sure to download the registration and the FAX (for ALL of your convention information); links to those and other materials are on the left as well as on the website (www.gjcl.org/convention).

Please note the following:

The registration dates have changed from previous years. There is now an early registration period, now until March 18 ($105 per delegate/chaperon); a late registration period, until April 1 ($110 per delegate/chaperon); and a late, late registration period after April 1 with a State Chair's approval ($120 per delegate/chaperon).
The additional membership form, for any students that were not included on your chapter registration but who are coming to convention, is now on the same form as the Convention registration.
Every student AND adult is required to complete a medical form and a release/permission form. These forms are now located in the FAX at the end. Please copy as needed.
Creative Arts Notes: 1. There is a limit of five entrants per level per school for Latin Oratory this year. 2. All Modern Myth and Slogan entries are due April 1 to creativearts@gjcl.org.
Don't forget to nominate students for the SOTY and teachers for the TOTY, www.gaclass.org.

Fall Forum Registration Ends Soon!!!

Fall Forum Registration will end tomorrow night at midnight! Act fast: you only need to mail in your form to be registered; bring your check the day of the event.

Also, remind those students who love to participate in JCL on the state and National level that a great way to become more involved is to enter the host/hostess contest. The two winners of this contest become members of the GJCL board. The contest consists of the following:

A speech delivered in Roman costume in an oratorical style. The content of the speech should be based on the NJCL Convention theme, "bene legere saecla vinere" - To read well is to conquer the ages.
An interview with the judges. The questions will probe the contestants' past involvement with the local, state and national levels of JCL. They will also ask questions about the contestants' enthusiasm for all things JCL. Finally, the judges are looking for two individuals who will represent the GJCL well (they are the welcomers at convention).

By now most of us have returned to school and those that have not will shortly. That means that another of year of GJCL activities is upon us as well.

First, the registration forms are available now. Act soon (by Fall Forum) and there is no charge for the chapter registration, just the individual student dues. A Note from the GSCL

GSCL is holding a Wii Mario Kart Tournament during workshop sessions 1, 2, and 3 at State Convention. Sessions during workshops 1 and 2 will be the preliminary rounds, and workshop 3 will be the final round. Since this is the first time we are doing this, we are only allowing 1 student from each school to sign up. It would be really great if you let your students know beforehand so you can determine who is going to compete before you get to Convention. Sign ups will be done the same way as those for That's Entertainment. A sign up sheet will be posted outside the auditorium after the first General Assembly that they will be able to put their name and school on. Students can either sign up for Round 1 or Round 2, but not both. Make sure that they know Round 1 conflicts with Ludi basketball and Nominations Committee, and Round 2 conflicts with That's Entertainment auditions and certamen quarterfinals. Only the winners from Rounds 1 and 2 will attend the Final Round during session 3, which conflicts with Open Forum and Ludi ultimate frisbee.

Convention is this Friday! I hope that you are as excited as I am. A few reminders (I am sure there will be more over the next two days).

Don't forget that there will be a bazaar. So bring your wares or your cash!
Remember, registration does NOT begin until 11am. Registration will once again take place at the auditorium. I suggest that all of your drivers go there first.
Look for an email from me today with your student id numbers. These are critical for every contest in which your students will participate. (Also, none of my emails are making it to Gwinnett folk).

CONVENTION WEEK!

We have had a very successful registration: just over 1000 participants (that is both adults and students). And though that is a little less than last year it is not as bad as I was worried it might be with the economy. It is also will work to our benefit to have slightly fewer since Rock Eagle is in the process of rebuilding two of the cabins! A couple of reminders:

Mordern Myth and slogan entries are due on April 12th. They need to be sent to creativearts@gjcl.org.
If you would prefer to bring your check with to convention rather than mailing it you may do so.
If you are interested in runnning a workshop then please contact Natalie at faulkner@gjcl.org.
Prospective candidates for president, vice president, secretary and parliamentarian need to complete the papers of candidacy and send them to parliamentarian@gjcl.org this week. http://www.gjcl.org/images/papers_of_candidacy_2010.xls.

Fall Forum and Membership Registration

Another year has begun and the GJCL officers have been hard at work planning this year’s activities. The GJCL year truly gets started with Fall Forum. The GJCL will once again visit Northview High School for Fall Forum (they hosted a fantastic Fall Forum in 2006). If you did not get the email last Spring or have not checked the calendar and website, Fall Forum is October 17 this year. This year registration is being conducted via an Excel form which then needs to be e-mailed to me. Registration is available now until October 11.

The first phase of membership is ongoing now until Fall Forum. And, as usual, you may bring your check with you to Fall Forum. Like Fall Forum registration, membership information is captured on an Excel form this year (available here and on the website) and then e-mailed to me (or the new treasurer when in place). There are two pages on the form (look for the tabs at the bottom). The first page is general chapter information and the second page is for individual student information.
